Art has been the route towards my future and my happiness since I was young. It became my way of finding myself. I take motivation in inspiring others the same way I was inspired with my art, especially other aspiring artists and my little cousins. Having an influence on that means a lot.
The medium I choose depends on the mood I want for the piece itself. Lately, I work with much brighter colors which both match my mood now as a senior. I’m more open of a person and more excited to pursue art. Using bright colors just seems right.
My piece is titled, Luminary Hindsight as it is meant to represent bits of vague memories I had as a child. I always had a profound love of the night sky and wanted the texture to stand out in order to represent the sky as a collection of multiple different memories, making it feel incomplete to reflect my memory loss. The medium used is similar to a kid’s project; all of the bright and vibrant colors come from the stars and the paper. These stars were made far before the idea for this piece, and I thought it would be nice to implement this with the meaning of this piece. The stars resemble an aurora borealis, which I dreamt of seeing. In the cityscape, you can see “말썽” (malsseong) meaning troublemaker in Korean. It’s a nickname my grandmother used to describe me, and it has stuck with me since my grandmother’s passing. The next is the “K Mart” which is just an allusion to the Korean markets I used to go to buy groceries and snacks at. I still struggle with memory loss, but I’m glad the ones I kept could be made into this piece.
