Senior

My name is Kyleigh Hogge and I am a senior at North Monterey County High School. During the past couple of years, art has become a big part of my life. In March 2020, we went into quarantine from the Covid-19 pandemic and I suddenly had so much time on my hands with nothing to do. Schools were closed, events were canceled, and we weren’t able to be around our loved ones. Art, however, provided me with a kind of escape from reality where I could get lost in my own world and focus on something other than the pandemic. It gave me a way to express myself and destress from everything going on in the world.

The artwork I am submitting to the For the Love of Art exhibit is called, Datsuzoku. Datsuzoku is a Japanese word that means to escape from the daily routine, to take a break from the conventions and mundanities of one’s life, to discover more creativity, resourcefulness, and to perceive your surroundings differently. The definition of the word datsuzoku reminds me of how I perceive art. In art, I escape my daily routines, reality, and enter a headspace of creativity and calmness.

The mediums I used in my artwork were a wood stain, black acrylic paint, opalescence, and a clear varnish.
