I spent almost a week trying to come up with an idea for this painting. I finally sat down and created a sketch after a sudden epiphany, only to scrap the idea and paint whatever I felt looked nice to me in the moment. Having an opportunity to paint for something like this gave me the push to finish this piece. The title is a lyric from Mitski’s “Liquid Smooth,” as it is the song I had stuck in my head while painting this. Music inspires most of my own art, especially Mitski.
I’ve been drawing and painting for as long as I can remember. Even when I’m not creating with the intent to finish my piece, I’m always sketching and doodling to the side of almost any paper put in front of me. I absentmindedly create art most of the time, and working with oil paint allows me to be flexible with my work. Seeing others’ interpretations of my art is my favorite part of being an artist.
