While raised in Carmel, California, I am a dual citizen of Ireland, and I find joy in retelling Irish mythology through my drawings. Through my work, I always tell a story, and whether it be from personal experience or from sharing a history, my goal is to communicate more than just an image – it is to share a narrative.
This work tells the story of Queen Meadhbh of Connaught, and her quest to obtain her husband's mighty brown bull. While a controversial character in Irish mythology (Meadhbh literally meaning “intoxicating”) there is a separate side to this warrior queen that is left untold in many retellings of Táin Bò Cuailnge (The Cattle Raid of Cooley). Women, throughout history, are routinely framed as figures of evil. Through this piece, I not only celebrate my Irish heritage, but work to communicate a different point of view when looking at old Irish tales, a point of view through the eyes of a feminist. Meadhbh was a powerful leader who stopped at nothing to prove her worth.
