Ella Clifton, The Goat, acrylic, $300

I have been doing art since age 3, sitting on my kitchen floor finger-painting on large scraps of butcher paper. The passion and enjoyment for creating art have never left me, they have only grown and developed. They led me down different paths in the art world from pencil art to acrylics, and even sculpting. My works tend to lean on the more fantastical side, with vibrant colors and unique subjects, while also exploring more taboo subjects like religion, body dysmorphia, and societal pressures through symbolism.

My medium of choice is acrylic, it is the type of paint I have the most experience with. For this piece, The Goat, I wanted to explore the use of color and line to create a wonderfully unique painting that blends abstract and realistic elements, in turn making a sort of dreamscape. A majority of my works follow a hypnotic theme and intrigue the eye into a world of color. I enjoy manipulating the shapes of my subjects, while also using techniques like colorblocking to achieve said dreamlike effects.

For this piece, I chose to use a goat as the “star” of the painting. Goats have long been depicted in paintings and verbal traditions throughout history, take Francisco Goya’s Witches’ Sabbath for example. Many cultures, for a long time, have had different perceptions of the goat. Some cultures, like tribes in Africa, see the goat as a representation of fertility, health, and prosperity, as goats provide a vital life source. Other cultures, especially those following Catholic roots, see goats as evil, with reference to biblical figures like Baphomet. In The Goat, I explored the way the goat is represented within cultures, some seeing it as a beacon, while others see it in red. I want my art to leave viewers with questions, and to have their imaginations run wild.
