For my painting of slices of cake, I was inspired by my current work of hyper realistic food. Recently, I have been experimenting with depth and perspective while I paint, so for this piece I wanted to continue my exploration. I chose to paint slices of cake because they represent slices of birthday cake, a food that I associate with happiness and community, something that is missing right now in many people’s lives. I felt that it was on topic to create a piece about the changes due to the pandemic and how it affects everyone’s lives. I also wanted to use bright and exciting colors to portray the happiness and joy associated with birthday cake, while also continuing to use a color palette that I enjoy painting with. For this competition, I hope to communicate my message of joy and happiness associated with community, and contrast that to the current events in the world. I hope this piece instills nostalgia among the viewers and conveys the importance of the small things in life that we should not take for granted.
