Senior

Hello, my name is Rob Englehorn and I am a Senior at Pacific Grove High School. I am currently working on an AP Portfolio in 2D design in Mr. Kelly´s AP Studio Art class. I see my art as the most basic way of how I can express my soul in a way that others can see. Since I was raised around art and frequently drew with my dad from a young age, art has made a lasting impression on me in my life. A goal of mine is to inspire the people around me to create their own art and spread the joy of being able to freely express oneself.

In terms of materials, I prefer to use ballpoint pens and graphite/colored pencils because I am most comfortable using these materials. My favorite technique to use in my art is mark making but I also like to use value shading and lighting to give a degree of reality to my pieces. The themes I am currently exploring are centered around the transition to adolescence and the experiences that children have growing up.

The piece that I have submitted for this competition is a love letter to my hometown, Pacific Grove. I regard P.G. as the town I grew up in so I wanted to express my gratitude in a piece of art. ¨The Last Home Town¨ is actually a revision of a 120 square foot mural that I led the creation of on my high school campus. My biggest challenge with this piece was being able to fill such a large canvas with detailed architecture. I am very proud of my work on this piece and I hope I can connect with people who feel the same way about my home.
