My name is Talia Jocelyn Coloma and I am currently a Senior attending Everett Alvarez High. In regards to art, it is a safe space where I can express my emotions, find outlets for creativity, and explore the endless limits of my imagination. Art is something I use to illustrate my feelings rather than express them because showing how you feel can be easier for others to understand or relate. I take a lot of inspiration from music, like Pablo Picasso said, “Music and Art are the guiding lights of the world.”
I chose the name Serenity for this piece because my love for art and music makes me feel calm, collected, and untroubled. I chose to paint butterflies because music and art makes me “have butterflies in my stomach”, but in a good way and I wanted to show what it makes me feel. The background is what I think sound waves would look like and also remind me of vinyl records, which I have a strong liking for. I chose to use acrylic paint which is one of my favorite art mediums.
Whenever I work on art pieces I like to listen to music to help me focus. I put on my headphones or blast a song on my speakers and I immediately feel comfort. When my hand touches a paint brush or marker I am at peace of mind, I feel like I am able to confront the things that trouble me and find consolation in the presence of my art and through the beautiful melodies and symphonies of music.
