Jonah Kortman

Youth Arts Collective

Senior

I am Jonah Kortman, a high school senior currently participating as an artist through the Youth Arts Collective. In less than a month I will be 18, and will begin to assume more of the full responsibilities of adulthood. While I am eager to have new experiences and opportunities, there are times that I dread the thought of getting older. Reflecting on themes of aging and life, I decided to paint an image of an old woman, smiling, with flowers decorating her hair. The contrast of blooming flowers and old age was made to show how beauty and joy can be part of all facets of life, young or old.  Rather than showing a lack of life, the woman is smiling, and full of life.  Similarly, rather than depicting the artwork in drab colors, I chose bright vibrant colors as a way to reflect a positive relationship and acceptance of getting older. In a world where so often getting older  is looked upon with negative connotations, I hope that I can have continued growth and new bloom.
