I find immense joy and meaning in creating works that capture serenity, beauty, and a sense of whimsy. As a bicultural young woman of Korean heritage, I drew my inspiration for this piece from the duality of my identity, blending cultural roots with personal growth. Art, to me, is an intimate and transformative process – it is where I am pushed to confront my frustrations, embrace challenges, and uncover magic in watching a piece come alive. My goal as an artist is not only to reflect my inner world but also to invite others to moments of quiet reflection and delight.
I work primarily in acrylics, a medium that allows me to layer and blend, mirroring the complexity of emotions and stories enveloped in every individual’s story. Flowers are a recurring motif in my work, as I appreciate their symbolization of fragility and resilience.
This piece, Blossoming, is a self-portrait surrounded by an assortment of Korean flowers, including cherry blossoms, moran (peony), and mugunghwa (hibiscus), which is Korea’s national flower. These blooms not only celebrate my heritage but also reflect my personal journey of progress and self-discovery. With Blossoming, I hope to convey a sense of harmony between self and surroundings, and I aim to share a piece of myself while honoring the beauty of cultural and personal growth.
