Something is wrong with this painting; it could be the strange shapes, the dark colors, or the faint but almost familiar glow of the windows. However, the reason this painting is off is that it was partially created by an AI (artificial intelligence) named DALL-E. This sophisticated AI uses text to generate complex images from a library of millions of photos. Since their inception, DALL-E and similar algorithms have faced widespread skepticism and uncertainty, and in many cases, the criticisms leveled at these technologies are justified. The power these algorithms wield is frightening and dangerous, and often, fear and misunderstanding only exacerbate these qualities.
What I think makes art beautiful is its ability to challenge and question our assumptions, and for me, I want to use my art to demonstrate that technology should not be feared and that it is often beneficial to us. However, art is only one piece of the puzzle. And in the case of technology, we as a society and as individuals have a shared responsibility to learn and educate ourselves about new technologies and to increase our awareness of the effects and implications certain technologies beget. I believe we have reached a tipping point in the realm of technology, and we need to question whether the things others create exist because they can or because they should. My intent with this painting is to depict a link between technology and humanity and to show that the things we might fear can be beautiful if only we look at them in a certain way. It is all about perspective, and maybe this house does not exist, but it is a home nonetheless.
